Manhattan Sound Big Band

MS Big Band, referred to fondly by its members, has been in operation and performing together for almost 40 years. The members change from time to time but the Longest and original member from the first line up is the band leader and Trumpet player Toby Livings who has seen all of the band through the decades. From its origins to when Saxophonist and arranger Bill Charleson led the ensemble and beyond to the co-operative democratic society that it now is.

The Band rehearse fastidiously every Tuesday at Golcar Liberal Club in the upstairs room, where they bring to life some most wonderful arrangements from the great Big Band  leaders like Gordon Goodwin, Ted Heath, Neil Hefti and Glenn Miller to name but a few. Then once a month at Moorlands Social Club, Bradford Road, Cleckheaton they perform to an ever supportive and appreciative crowd.

Amongst the instrumental favourites are a selection of equally wonderful vocal arrangements which are performed by lead vocalist Nicki Allan, the resident singer with the band for the last 10 years. Powerful vocal numbers by great female Big Band singers Natalie Cole, Doris Day, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee & Dianne Reeves are a few, plus modern popular arrangements from Randy Crawford to Earth, Wine and Fire.  Nicki’s versatile vocal tones can cope with just about anything and add yet another dimension to the Band’s unique sound.
