MS Big Band as it has become to be known by its members has been in operation and performing for almost 40 years. The Longest and original member from the first line up is Trumpet player Toby Livings who has seen all stages of the band through the decades. From its origins to when Saxophonist and arranger Bill Charleson led the ensemble and beyond to the co-operative democratic society that now exists.
The Band rehearse fastidiously every Tuesday at Golcar Liberal Club in the upstairs room, where they bring to life some most wonderful arrangements from great Big Band leaders Gordon Goodwin, Ted Heath, Neil Hefti and Glenn Miller. Then once a month at Moorlands Social Club, Bradford Road, Cleckheaton they perform to an ever supportive and appreciative crowd.
Amongst the instrumental favourites are a selection of equally wonderful vocal arrangements which are performed by lead vocalist Nicki Allan, the resident singer with the band for the last 10 years. Powerful vocal numbers by Natalie Cole’s Avalon, Doris Day’s Sentimental Journey & Ella Fitzgerald’s Every time we say goodbye, through to Dianne Reeves’ Too Close for Comfort and everything else in-between, Got to get you into my life, My boy lollipop and One day I’ll fly away, Nicki’s versatile vocal tones can cope with just about anything and add another dimension to the Band’s unique sound.
